Leicester athletes spearheaded the East Midlands challenge for medals - particularly in the field events at the recent England Athletics Aviva Under 23 and Under 20 Track and Field Championships at the Bedford International Stadium writes Tom McCook.
The European Under 23 Discus champion Eden Francis, who is coached by her mother Glenys Morton, overcame some technical hitches to mount a successful defence of her England Under 23 Discus title. The Birchfield Harrier’s fifth round throw, which fell within one centimetre of 59 metres, was a massive improvement of a metre and three quarters to the two year old Championship Best Performance. Eden commented, “I was very pleased to have achieved the B standard for the European championships. Every thing went to plan despite having had a wrist injury last winter and I know that there is so much more to come from me this year.” The 21-year old completed her golden double victory when she also won the Shot title with a 15.83 metres put in the fourth round of the competition.
Laura Samuel shines
Leicester Coritanian’s Laura Samuel, who is also coached by Glenys Morton, successfully defended her England Junior Triple Jump crown to accompany the two equivalent national Indoor titles which she has won in the past 18 months. In unseasonal low temperatures and a swirling wind, the 19-year old - as she so often has done in the past - kept her best until last with a 12.71m performance when the wind gauge measured the wind speed as marginally exceeding the two metres per second legal limit. The Leicester teenager also finished fourth in the Long Jump, with a 5.84m leap.!!LCAC Vets Team in Midland Masters League (Age ranges from 35-60+)
