Brilliance at BMC

There were many outstanding performances at the British Milers Club PB Classic at Milton Keynes on Saturday 19th May. It was a cold and dismal evening but this did not deter the athletes who were intent on reducing their personal best performances.

Mari Smith U17 had an outstanding race to reduce her pb to 2.10.02. This was the second time this week that Mari had reduced her 800m pb and not only it has moves her up to joint 6th on the Power of 10 but she has now taken the club age group record from Maxine Newman which was 2.10.7 and had stood since 1987.

Also in the same race was Amy Griffiths whose 2.12.62 knocked 5 seconds off of her pb and moves her to 10th on the Power of 10.

Pascal Bouttier-Butler U15 reduced his 1500m pb by a huge 9 seconds finishing in 4.47.31 and both Ella Shirley U17 and Alice Porter U15 followed suit with 6 seconds from their pb's with 4.52.42 and 5.01.96 respectively.

Jonny Monk U20 again dipped under the 2 minute mark with 1.59.68 which was a few hundredths outside his personal best. So far this season Jonny has consistently finished around the 2 minute mark.

Matt Griffiths U15 relished the 800m in only his second outing to take 5 seconds off of his debut race time with 2.15.57. Not to be outdone by Matt, both Serena Moore U15 2.37.55 and Jordan Waine U13 2.37.01 both reduced their pb's by 5 seconds also.

James Hatton U17 performance of 2.01.26 was a welcome return to form after his recent injury woes.

Alison Curtis U13 had to wait for the last race of the night for her 1500m pb. Having to deal with a lack of light, due to no flood lights, Ali ran well to knock a further 2 seconds off of her pb.

More records for Masters Men! (12th May 2012)

Congratulations to the team members who successfully defended the M45 team title at Saturdays British Masters road relay championships in a race record time of 1hr 37mins 48secs. The squad dictated the race with yet another gun to tape victory.

Gordon Lee, who recorded a new record fastest leg time, was the lead man in 15.12. handing over to Rob Sheen who ran 16.31. Gareth Deacon took over and increased the lead further in a time of 16.16 to hand over to Derek Guess who  stretched the lead even further to 3mins 30secs with a time of 16.59. Tommy Hughes ran an unbelievable 16.08 only six days after recording a 2hrs 29mins 43secs marathon time at the Belfast Marathon which was only two weeks after London where he recorded 2hrs 29mins 56secs. Danny Keating was left to run the glory leg in 16.41 to bring the club home in front of Bristol and West 1hr 40mins and City of Oxford 1hr 41mins 29secs.

A big thank you must also go to Chris Berwick for turning out at the Hinckley Half Marathon thus scoring 11 valuable league points towards the summer total.

Amy wins gold medal at Sainsbury's UK School Games and achieves Championship record time in the process. (9th May 2012)

Amy Griffiths won the 3000m at the Sainsbury's UK School Games which was held at the Olympic Park yesterday. The youngster defeated race favourite Bobby Clay in the thrilling race which saw Amy pull away with 150m to go.
Her time of 9.32.86 bettered the Championship record which had been held by Charlotte Purdue of Aldershot, Farnham and District since 2006 and has catapulted Amy to the top of the Power of 10 rankings. Her time also betters Helen Titterington's club record which has stood since 1986!

Tommy Does It Again!

Two weeks after being first M50 to finish in the Virgin London Marathon, Tommy Hughes followed it up with another outstanding performance at the Belfast Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday recording a marginally quicker time of 2hrs. 29mins. 43secs. to take 1st M50 and 8th overall.

Not being hampered by the slow start he experienced at London he was able to get into a comfortable pace much earlier and was then able to easily confront the more difficult course and he found the pace easier for longer not having to dig in until 23 miles instead of at 20 miles as he did in London.

'I was ecstatic at running under 2hrs. 30mins so soon after London and thrilled at achieving my goal of being first Irish born  runner to finish,' said the delighted Tommy.

PB's galore at Watford Open. (2nd May 2012)

For many athletes it was the opening of the track season when they travelled to Watford for the Open Meeting on Wednesday night.

The conditions were not best suited for the youngsters who had to battle the wind and rain but to their credit the majority of them either came away from the Open with personal best performances or were very close to them.

Jonny Monk (U20 men) had a superb 800m race to knock 8 seconds from his PB and to dip below the magic two minute mark. His time of 1.59.46 was just reward after being troubled by injury over the last few months.

Sam Elliott (U15 boys) was surprised by his 800m effort which resulted in him reducing his PB by seven seconds to 2.10.4 and James Bell (U15 boys) followed suit by reducing his previous best by 10 seconds to 2.24.16.

Amy Griffiths (U17 girls) completed the 1500m with a personal best performance in 4.31.23 which currently puts her 3rd on the Power of 10 ranking and Mari Smith's (U17 girls) 800m 2.12.96 currently puts her at 6th on the Power of 10 ranking.

Brookes wins England Duathlon Championship! (28th April)

On Saturday 28th April Robin Brookes  travelled to Carsington Water near Ashbourne to compete in the England Duathlon age group Championships. The race consisted of a 12k run , 40k bike ride and finished with a 4k run.

The first 12k run was completed on an undulating course around Carsington Water before the hilly 40k bike ride. The final 4k was a flat run out and back across the dam . Battling the poor conditions, Brookes triumphed in the 50 to 55 age group to take the gold medal and become the England age group duathlon champion in a total time of 2 hours 29 minutes.
