Leicestershire & Rutland County Championships at Rotherby Hall Farm, Saturday 5th January 2013The Leicestershire and Rutland County Championships were held at Rotherby Hall Farm on Saturday. The heavy mud made for testing conditions on the hilly course and thankfully the weather held out for the duration of the event.
There were individual successes as well as team successes across the board with Kristian Edwards leading the medal haul with his gold medal in the Junior men's race. Jonny Monk also had a fantastic run to follow Kristian home with the silver medal. Having just moved into this age group and new to a longer distance, the boys showed their maturity whilst racing with the Senior and Masters Men.
The Masters Men Team took the silver team medal with Gordon Lee also claiming the silver individual medal. Chris Southam finished in 4th place with Gareth Deacon following on in 5th place.
Jordan Waine ran a tactical race but was out sprinted in the last 200m and came a close second in the U13 girls' race. The U13 girls' team took the silver medal with Fran Green in 4th place and Connie-Mae Roper in 10th place.
In the U17 men's race, James Hatton led the team to the gold medal with his individual silver medal. James was happy with his performance and the team medal. Fast finishing Harry Thompson revelled in the conditions and his bronze individual medal. David Robertson finished in 6th place to complete the winning team.
Amy Griffiths and Mari Smith U17 girls' had a battle on their hands with Hannah Nuttall from Charnwood. With the three of them tightly locked together over the first lap, they only broke up when Hannah started to push the pace midway through the second lap. Amy finished in 2nd place and Mari in 3rd place. They were followed by Lucille Rostron in 7th place and the team finished with the same points as Charnwood, however, Charnwood took the team gold medal on count back.
Josh West was the only Leicester Coritanian athlete in the U13 boys' race and he duly came away with the bronze medal.
Great team packing in both the U15 girls' and boys' races meant that we were certain of more success. Sam Elliott ran a great race to finish in 3rd place, with Cameron Smith and James Owen in 4th and 5th places. This ensured they won the team gold medal.
Caitlin Roper led the U15 girls' team home in 5th place. Like the boys' team they packed well and just missed out on the gold team medal. Mikela Gilmore finished behind Caitlin in 6th place and Serena Moore was in 7th place. Special mention must certainly go to Georgia Smith who ran a plucky race with one shoe. The youngster lost her shoe in the mud and with true grit and determination finished the race in a fine 10th place.
A bronze medal went to April Beeby in the Junior Women's race which was a tremendous effort considering she has been unwell and is still recovering. Freya Vincent finished in 4th place and had her war wounds to prove it after falling in the mud. Freya had returned from Sunderland University especially to compete.
