Leicestershire & Rutland County Cross Country Championships

Leicestershire & Rutland County Cross Country results

Despite the wet and windy conditions, there were some great results for the Leicester Coritanian athletes who competed at the Leicestershire and Rutland County Cross Country Championships at Brocks Hill, Oadby on Saturday 4th January 2014.

The heavy rain continued throughout the race programme and the athletes had to endure the extremely muddy conditions but their determination shone through.

Leicester Coritanians came away with a total of 4 individual gold medals, 5 individual silver medals and 2 individual bronze medals and they followed up this success with 4 team gold medals and 2 silver team medals.

There was no surprise when Ben Dijkstra won the U15b race. He has been in superb form this season and it was great to see Alfie Thompson only 10 seconds behind him to take the silver medal. It was Pascal Bouttier-Butler who completed the team in 11th place to win the silver team medal.

After a slow tactical start in the U15g race it was Jordan Waine who eventually prevailed, beating team mate Caitlin Roper into the silver medal position. Again great team packing from Megan Rowley in 7th place and Alex West in 9th place ensured that the girls came away with the team gold.

Gold was the order of the day in both the junior races. In the junior men's race, Harry Thompson led his team mates to the team gold by winning the race in 41.17. Jamie Short triumphed in 4th place over younger brother Harry who was 9th with Kristian Edwards in 8th place.

In the junior women's race, Amy Griffiths led the way with her first place, finishing ahead of all the senior athletes, which has never been done by a junior athlete before and it meant that she won the Alf Williams Trophy. April Beeby put in a strong performance to finish in the silver medal position with the fast improving Jasmin Southam who is on the injury comeback trail taking the bronze.

James Hatton and Tom Loring battled with Euan Makepeace of Charnwood in the U17 mens race to take the team gold medal. James just lost out to Euan and had to settle for the silver but it was a great tussle between the pair with Tom not far behind in the bronze medal position. A fine finish by Amrik Gill who was 6th sealed the gold medal win but the strength and depth of the boys team meant that they all finished in the top 10.

Hannah Nuttall was just too strong for Mari Smith in the U17 women's race on this occasion but the battle between these two keeps raging and there will undoubtedly be more great races between these two before the season is finished. Alice Porter had a great race to finish in 5th place.

The U13 girls race had a lot of athletes new to competing and the conditions did not deter them. Led home by Neve Grimes in 5th place, the other scoring team members were Emma Richards in 6th place and Zena Challenger in 11th place and the girls were happy with their well deserved team silver medal.

Also there were fine performances from Louisa Buttanshaw who was 7th in the senior womens race and Manju Moon who was 7th place in the masters women race. Whilst Dave Pearce was 4th in the masters mens race.
